Not everyone considers themselves an “adventurer,” and that’s ok! However, there are 10 experiences in particular that will take your breath away without getting the adrenaline pumping too much. If these items aren’t on your bucket list yet, make sure you add them ASAP!
1. Spontaneous Travel
Once in your life, you should go to the airport (or train station, or whatever fits your means), walk up to the ticket counter, and exclaim “I’ll take the next flight out!” The rush of excitement and anticipation will definitely put a smile on your face, and hopefully you’ll be delighted with the destination! To make the experience more rewarding, consider implementing one rule: you can’t go to a place you’ve already been!
2. Spa Day
What’s better than a day spent relaxing and rejuvenating? A day spent relaxing and rejuvenating with other people pampering you. A day at the spa is something everyone should experience—and not just a massage or just a facial, go for the whole nine yards at least once in your life. Many spas do package deals for a discounted price, and often they come with use of facilities like a sauna, showers, and even a pool.
3. Take a Road Trip
The open road is an interesting and honest place—you will do some of your best thinking on the road while passing through much more countryside than you could ever imagine. If you’re lucky you’ll also develop a deeper connection to your travel buddies or, at the very least, get to know yourself a little better.
4. Serve Soup at a Homeless Shelter
Many Bucket Lists focus on ourselves, and often we forget what a rewarding experience it is to do something for those in need. We may say skydiving and bungee jumping are life-changing, but so is serving soup at a homeless shelter—it will remind you to be grateful for what you have while also giving you perspective on your life.
5. See the Northern Lights
The Aurora Borealis is mesmerizing—it’s difficult to put into words. You must see it for yourself, and trust me, it will take your breath away. But that’s not the only reason seeing the Northern Lights is a bucket list must; getting to where you can see them is an experience in itself. Whether it’s curling up in a glass igloo in Finland or heading out on a boat from Reykjavik in the middle of the night, getting to where you can see the Northern Lights is quite an adventure and seeing them is your magical reward.
6. Climb a Mountain
Nothing says success like standing at the top of a mountain. And talk about rewarding! Climbing a mountain may be challenging, but the view from the top will make you feel accomplished and proud of the hard work you’ve just done. If you’re worried about your physical ability, try a relatively easy mountain (as easy as climbing a mountain gets, anyway) like Guadalupe Peak in Texas, Stony Man Mountain in Virginia, or Mt Katahdin in Maine.
7. Skydiving (alternative: indoor skydyiving)
Ok so this one is a little bit of an adrenaline activity, but come on—you need some adventure in your life, right?! If you’re currently thinking, “Cayla, you’re crazy,” then consider this milder alternative: indoor skydiving. It will still give you a rush but is not nearly as radical as jumping out of a perfectly good plane at 15,000 feet. There’s no parachute to pull and no rough landing. During an indoor skydiving session you will likely be no more than 15 feet off the ground. It’s a way to experience the rush of falling through the air without actually falling or going anywhere.
8. Go inside a cave
If you’ve never been in a cave (a true, natural cave), it’s impossible to imagine the magic and peacefulness of one. Sometimes called spelunking, exploring caves will make you feel like a true explorer. You may find anything from waterfalls and rivers to stalactites and bats. For spectacular sights and a bit of adventure, try the magical Glowworm Cave in New Zealand or Fingal Cave in Scotland. For a milder experience, try a cave like Ruby Falls in Tennessee or Kartchner Caverns in Arizona.
Ziplining is a whirlwind of adrenaline without the need for much physical fitness or skill. You can sit back and enjoy the view while gliding above a rainforest or down a mountain—and that’s why everyone should give it a shot at least once. Ziplining is easy and fun while still being exciting and adventurous. Ready to cruise? Head to the world’s longest and highest zipline, the Icy Strait Point ZipRider, in Hoonah, Alaska or, for rainforest and volcano views, try the Arenal Volcano Park Zipline in Costa Rica.
10. Snorkel a Coral Reef
Snorkeling a coral reef is truly like entering another world. You can float through the water feeling free as a bird while gawking at the colorful fish and otherworldly coral below you. Trust me when I say it’s magical in the most wonderful way—to see what it’s like under the sea, where countless magical creatures roam the oceans. There are many coral reefs in the world, ranging from the famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia to a little reef around a lighthouse in the Florida Keys called Alligator Reef. Wherever you are or wherever you’re going, chances are there’s a coral reef not too far away. And if it is far, combine it with another one of your Bucket List items for the ultimate Bucket List adventure!
